ယောက် / ခု / လုံး
Choosing a Classifier
When you don't know the right classifier, ခု works for most objects, but never for people or animals.
How It Works
Each classifier covers one kind of thing. Learn these first:

People always take ယောက်, and monks always take ပါး. Using ခု for a person sounds like you are counting objects.
When you meet a new noun, learn its classifier with it, the way English speakers learn "a cup of" or "a slice of". The classifier is the same for every number: လူ တစ်ယောက် (one person), လူ ဆယ်ယောက် (ten people).
If you are not sure, ask: ဒါကို ဘယ်လိုရေလဲ။ (How do you count this?)

Three students came.
ယောက် counts people.
- ခွေး နှစ်ကောင် ရှိတယ်။
There are two dogs.
ကောင် counts animals.
- ပန်းသီး ငါးလုံး ပေးပါ။
Five apples, please.
လုံး counts round things like fruit.
- ဘောပင် တစ်ချောင်း လိုတယ်။
I need a pen.
ချောင်း counts long, thin things.
- ဘုန်းကြီး နှစ်ပါး ကြွလာပါတယ်။
Two monks came.
Monks take ပါး, and ကြွ is the respectful verb for their coming.
Common Mistakes
Counting people with ခု.
ကျောင်းသား သုံးခုကျောင်းသား သုံးယောက်ခု is for objects. People always take ယောက်.
Counting books with စောင်.
စာအုပ် နှစ်စောင်စာအုပ် နှစ်အုပ်Books take အုပ်. စောင် is for letters and newspapers.
