With a negative, it compares with what you expected: ထင်သလောက် မခက်ဘူး။ (It isn't as hard as I thought.)

How It Works

လောက် means "about" or "as much as". After a verb, it takes သ in front: သလောက်.

သိသလောက်တော့ opens a sentence with "as far as I know": ကျွန်မ သိသလောက်တော့ သူ မန္တလေးမှာ နေတယ်.

Keep it apart from သလို, which is about the way you do something. စားချင်သလို စားပါ means "Eat it however you like".

After a noun, လောက် has no သ: ငါးမိနစ်လောက် (about five minutes).

With ပဲ, it limits the amount: တတ်နိုင်သလောက်ပဲ ပေးပါ (Just give what you can). ကြားသလောက်တော့ (from what I've heard) works like သိသလောက်တော့.

    A man speaks. တတ်နိုင်သလောက် means "as much as I can".

  3. ကျွန်မ သိသလောက်တော့ သူ မန္တလေးမှာ နေတယ်။

    As far as I know, he lives in Mandalay.

    A woman speaks. သိသလောက် means "as far as I know".

  4. မြန်မာစကား ထင်သလောက် မခက်ဘူး။

    Burmese isn't as hard as I thought.

    With a negative, သလောက် compares with a guess.

  5. လိုသလောက် ယူသွားပါ။

    Take as many as you need.

    လိုသလောက် means "as much as you need".

  • Leaving out သ after a verb.

    စားချင်လောက် စားပါ။
    စားချင်သလောက် စားပါ။

    After a verb, write သလောက်. Bare လောက် follows a noun or a number, as in ငါးမိနစ်လောက်.
