လို

Like and in a Language

Level 2

This လို has no dot below; လို့ with the dot means "because" or marks a quote.

How It Works

Put လို after a noun. With a language name, it means "in that language". With anything else, it means "like" or "in the way of".

PhraseMeaning
မြန်မာလိုin Burmese
အင်္ဂလိပ်လိုin English
ဂျပန်လိုin Japanese
ကလေးလိုlike a child
ဒီလိုlike this
အဲဒီလိုlike that

The most useful question for a learner is ဒါကို မြန်မာလို ဘယ်လိုခေါ်လဲ။ (What do you call this in Burmese?)

ဒီလို and အဲဒီလို describe how to do something: ဒီလို လုပ်ပါ။ (Do it like this.)

Watch the spelling. This လို has no dot. လို့ with a dot below means "because" or marks a quote, and the verb လို means "need".

To say someone looks like another person, use နဲ့တူ.

Name the language first and add လို right after it, with no space between them.

Common Mistakes

    မြန်မာလို ပြောတတ်လား။

With a language name, add လို to mean "in Burmese", or say မြန်မာစကား (the Burmese language).

  • Writing လို့ with a dot for "in a language".

    မြန်မာလို့ ပြောပါ။
    မြန်မာလို ပြောပါ။

"In Burmese" is လို with no dot. လို့ with a dot means "because".
