Counting Things

Level 2

A classifier is a small word that shows what kind of thing you count. A number never stands alone before a noun.

How It Works

English says "two coffees". Burmese says ကော်ဖီ နှစ်ခွက်, "coffee two-cup". The classifier ခွက် shows what kind of thing is counted.

NumberWordNumberWord
၁တစ်၆ခြောက်
၂နှစ်၇ခုနစ်
၃သုံး၈ရှစ်
၄လေး၉ကိုး
၅ငါး၁၀တစ်ဆယ်

Before a classifier, တစ်, နှစ် and ခုနစ် are said short, like tə, hnə and khun-hnə. The spelling stays the same.

You can write the number with Burmese digits and a space: ကျောင်းသား ၁၅ ယောက် (fifteen students). Use Burmese digits, never Western ones, in Burmese text.

The noun can be left out when everyone knows what you mean. A waiter asks ဘယ်နှခွက်လဲ (How many cups?), and you answer နှစ်ခွက်ပါ (Two, please). The classifier stays, because it carries the meaning.

Examples (5)

  1. ကော်ဖီ နှစ်ခွက် ပေးပါ။

    Two cups of coffee, please.

ကော်ဖီ comes first, then နှစ် and the classifier ခွက်.

  2. ကျွန်မမှာ ကြောင် သုံးကောင် ရှိတယ်။

    I have three cats.

A woman speaks; ကောင် is the classifier for animals.

  3. စာအုပ် တစ်အုပ် ဝယ်မယ်။

I'm going to buy a book.

အုပ် is the classifier for books.

  4. ကျောင်းသား ၁၅ ယောက် ရှိတယ်။

    There are fifteen students.

Burmese digits stand before the classifier ယောက်.

  5. မုန့်ဟင်းခါး တစ်ပွဲ ယူမယ်။

I'll have one bowl of mohinga.

ပွဲ counts plates and bowls of food.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the number before the noun, in English order.

    နှစ် ကော်ဖီ ပေးပါ။
    ကော်ဖီ နှစ်ခွက် ပေးပါ။

The noun comes first, then the number and the classifier.

  • Leaving out the classifier.

    ကြောင် သုံး ရှိတယ်။
    ကြောင် သုံးကောင် ရှိတယ်။

Every counted noun needs a classifier after the number.
