The question ဘယ်လောက်လဲ။ (How much is it?) is built on the same word.

How It Works

လောက် has two jobs, and it always comes after the word it belongs to.

For "about", put လောက် after the classifier: ဆယ်ယောက်လောက် (about ten people), never ဆယ်လောက်ယောက်.

For "as … as", put လောက် after the person you compare with. With a negative, it means "not as … as": ကျွန်မ သူ့လောက် မမြင့်ဘူး။ (I'm not as tall as her.)

ဒီလောက် means "this much" or "so": ဒီလောက် မပူပါဘူး။ (It's not that hot.)

The question word ဘယ်လောက် asks how much: ဒါ ဘယ်လောက်လဲ။ (How much is this?)

At the end of a talk, ဒီလောက်ပါပဲ။ means "That's all."

  1. ဆယ်မိနစ်လောက် စောင့်ပါဦး။

    Please wait about ten minutes.

    လောက် after the time means "about".

  2. ဒီအင်္ကျီ ၁၅၀၀၀ ကျပ်လောက် ပေးရတယ်။

    I paid about 15,000 kyat for this shirt.

    လောက် comes after the price and ကျပ်.

  3. ပွဲကို လူ ငါးဆယ်ယောက်လောက် လာတယ်။

    About fifty people came to the event.

    လောက် comes after the classifier ယောက်.

  4. ညီလေးက အစ်ကိုလောက် မြင့်ပြီ။

    My little brother is as tall as my older brother now.

    လောက် after a person means "as much as".

  5. ကျွန်မ သူ့လောက် မြန်မာလို မပြောတတ်ဘူး။

    I can't speak Burmese as well as she can.

    With a negative, လောက် means "not as … as"; သူ can mean he or she.

  • Putting လောက် before the number.

    လောက် ငါးမိနစ် စောင့်ပါ။
    ငါးမိနစ်လောက် စောင့်ပါ။

    လောက် comes after the number and its classifier.
