Otherwise

Level 4

Use ไม่งั้น to introduce the alternative if the preceding action or condition does not hold. The examples use it in warnings, but the connector itself means “otherwise.”

How It Works

ไม่งั้น is a conversational connector meaning “otherwise” or “or else.” It links the preceding action or condition to an alternative.

1. Read Both Parts
รีบหน่อย ไม่งั้นไม่ทัน asks someone to hurry and gives not arriving in time as the alternative. The umbrella example gives getting wet as the alternative to taking an umbrella. These particular sentences warn about an unwanted result; that is not a requirement of every use of ไม่งั้น.

2. Read The Result Clause
The hurry example has no จะ. The eating, studying, and umbrella examples use จะ with the projected result. Keep the complete clause rather than adding จะ automatically. The primary dictionary also records a result containing ก็ after the alternative condition; this does not establish a fixed emphasis or an obligatory pairing.

3. The Practice Contrasts
For the rain task's intended meaning, “in that case, let us stay home,” use ถ้างั้น. ไม่งั้น instead means “otherwise.” In the company-notice task, compare conversational ไม่งั้น with มิฉะนั้น, another expression meaning “otherwise.” The supplied correction chooses มิฉะนั้น for that formal notice; it is not a rule that all workplace or legal sentences require one connector.

Examples (4)

Hurry up, otherwise [we] won't make it in time.

Word by Word: Hurry a little, otherwise not in time.

The result clause ไม่ทัน contains no จะ. It gives not making it in time as the consequence if the person does not hurry.

Eat a lot, or else you'll be hungry late at night.

Word by Word: Eat rice a lot a lot, otherwise will hungry time late-night.

Shows the use of 'จะ' after 'ไม่งั้น' to indicate a future consequence.

Pay attention to your studies, otherwise you'll fail the exam.

Word by Word: Set heart study [softener], otherwise will exam fall.

The first clause urges study with นะ. The second clause uses ไม่งั้น to introduce the projected exam result; the warning belongs to this sentence.

You must take an umbrella, otherwise you'll get wet.

Word by Word: Must take umbrella go, otherwise will wet.

Uses 'ต้อง' (must) to set the condition before the warning.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing 'ไม่งั้น' (otherwise) with 'ถ้างั้น' (in that case).

The intended message is 'It is raining, so let us stay home'. Use ถ้างั้น for 'in that case'. ไม่งั้น instead introduces what follows if the previous situation or action does not hold; it is not a connector meaning 'therefore'. This is a mismatch with the intended message, not a claim that every ไม่งั้น result must be bad.

  • Using a casual connector when drafting a formal legal notice.

Both connectors can express “otherwise.” This task chooses มิฉะนั้น for the intended formal company notice, while ไม่งั้น is labelled conversational in the primary dictionary. The first sentence is understandable; the task does not establish a legal requirement or prohibit conversational wording at work.

Learn This First

ไม่งั้น (otherwise) is used to link two clauses where the second clause is the negative consequence of not doing the first. To understand it, learners need to be familiar with basic negation, the concept of 'if' conditions, and how Thai uses demonstratives like 'นั้น' to refer back to preceding statements.
