Spacing In Thai Text

Foundations

ผมกินข้าวแล้ว contains no space between each word. The other examples display spaces before a contrasting clause, within a personal name, and between listed items. Interpret those spaces in the complete text.

How It Works

Read the displayed continuous text: ผมกินข้าวแล้ว gives the selected reading I have eaten rice. Its words are written together. The first exercise requests ผมกินข้าว exactly, rather than inserting a space between each of its three words.

Compare the displayed spaces: เขาสูงมาก แต่ฉันเตี้ย has a space before the contrasting clause introduced by แต่. นายสมชาย แซ่ตั้ง displays a space in the selected personal name. ฉันชอบหมา แมว และนก displays spaces between items in the list. These examples show specific written groupings; they do not establish every name, number, list, or topic-shift spacing rule, or a required size for each space.

Identify words through complete context: Compare the written positions of the linked leading vowel signs and the linked silent mark in their own full examples. Neither a left-positioned vowel sign nor a silent mark establishes a word boundary by itself.

Keep punctuation in context: The second exercise requests ผมกินข้าวแล้วครับ without a final Latin period. The archived version with a period does not match that requested format; the task does not ban periods in all Thai writing. The Unicode Thai section also describes the use of Latin commas, periods, and colons in text. Spacing is a writing feature here, not a measurement of spoken pauses or evidence that one format is harder for every native reader.

Examples (4)

  1. ผมกินข้าวแล้ว

    I have eaten rice.

Word by Word: I | eat | rice | already

The displayed sequence joins ผม, กิน, ข้าว, and แล้ว without interword spaces. Already is the selected reading of แล้ว in this context.

  2. เขาสูงมาก แต่ฉันเตี้ย

He is very tall, but I am short.

Word by Word: he | tall | very [space] but | I | short

The space appears before แต่ฉันเตี้ย, the contrasting clause. The English and Indonesian commas render this grouping; they do not mean that every Thai space has the same punctuation function.

  3. นายสมชาย แซ่ตั้ง

    Mr. Somchai Saetang

Word by Word: Mr. | Somchai [space] Saetang

This written personal-name example places a space between นายสมชาย and แซ่ตั้ง. Read the displayed name as a whole; one example does not establish a universal formatting rule for every kind of personal name.

  4. ฉันชอบหมา แมว และนก

I like dogs, cats, and birds.

Word by Word: I | like | dogs [space] cats [space] and | birds

Spaces separate the displayed dog, cat, and bird items. The English plural nouns fit the selected general-preference reading; the Thai and Indonesian nouns do not carry those English plural endings.

Common Mistakes

  • Use the requested continuous form ผมกินข้าว.

    ผม กิน ข้าว
    ผมกินข้าว

The exercise requests ผมกินข้าว without interword spaces. The archived ผม กิน ข้าว inserts spaces between the same three words and does not reproduce that format. The exercise does not make a psychological or frequency claim about native readers.

  • Reproduce the requested sentence without a final Latin period.

    ผมกินข้าวแล้วครับ.
    ผมกินข้าวแล้วครับ

The requested form is ผมกินข้าวแล้วครับ. The archived ผมกินข้าวแล้วครับ. includes a final Latin period and differs from the requested format. ครับ remains part of both Thai strings. This task does not establish that Thai writing never uses periods or other Latin punctuation.
