Therefore
เพราะฉะนั้น introduces a result or conclusion from a reason already given. It can mean 'therefore', 'so', or 'consequently'. It can also introduce a clause containing จึง.
How It Works
เพราะฉะนั้น connects a reason with a result or conclusion. Compare the related เพราะ ('because') and ฉะนั้น ('thus').
1. Linking statements
In the examples here, the connector begins the result clause:
• [Reason] + เพราะฉะนั้น + [Result or conclusion]
2. The pairing with จึง
You can use เพราะฉะนั้น with a result clause containing จึง. Here, เพราะฉะนั้น introduces the result clause, and จึง follows its stated subject:
• [Reason] + เพราะฉะนั้น + [Subject] + จึง + [Result predicate]
3. Following the context
The preceding statement gives a reason for the result, conclusion, or advice. Choose wording to suit the conversation or text. The related ฉะนั้น also introduces a conclusion.
Examples (4)
Therefore, we have to hurry.
Word by Word: Therefore we must hurry
The reason comes from the preceding context, and the result is that we must hurry. This example works without 'jeung'.
It rained heavily; therefore, he arrived late.
Word by Word: Rain fall heavy, therefore he [consequently] come late
The heavy rain is presented as the reason for being late. In this clause, 'jeung' follows the subject 'khăo'.
You are still young; therefore, you should listen to the warnings of adults.
Word by Word: You still child stay, therefore should listen word warn of adult
The first clause supplies the speaker’s reason for the advice in the second clause.
He has a lot of experience; therefore, the company chose him.
Word by Word: He have experience much, therefore company [consequently] choose him
The speaker presents the person's experience as the reason for the company's choice. The result clause includes 'jeung'.
Common Mistakes
Reversing the intended reason and result.
For the intended meaning 'I am late because it is raining', state the rain first and then introduce being late as the result. The original order gives the opposite reason-to-result connection.
Putting 'jeung' before the stated subject in this clause.
In this exercise, 'jeung' belongs after the stated subject 'khăo' and before the result predicate. The corrected sentence keeps that clause order.
