Adjectives Work As Verbs
Thai property words such as สูง and ใหญ่ can form predicates directly. English adds 'is' in the corresponding descriptions; these Thai examples do not need an extra linking word.
How It Works
Many Thai property words can serve directly as predicates. They are often taught as stative verbs (กริยาสภาวะ) because they describe a state without a separate linking word in simple clauses. Here, focus on that sentence function rather than treating every word translated as an English adjective as one identical lexical class.
1. Direct Property Predicates
The requested height statement is เขาสูง: สูง supplies the predicate. Do not insert เป็น (pen) or คือ (khue) merely because its English translation contains 'is'. The task's เขาเป็นสูง does not give the intended simple height statement. เป็น occurs with noun roles and categories, but it also has other constructions, including some uses with property words. This task does not establish a ban on every such use, and it does not justify translating the incorrect task as 'He is a tallness'. In the literal glosses below, bracketed [to be] is an English aid, not an overt Thai copula.
2. Predicate And Modifier Readings
A property predicate follows the subject in the simple clauses shown here. A property word can also follow a noun as a modifier. Context helps distinguish the readings.
- Statement: บ้านใหญ่ (Ban yai) can mean 'The house is big' in a complete statement.
- Description in context: บ้านใหญ่สวย (Ban yai suai) can mean 'The big house is beautiful', with ใหญ่ modifying บ้าน and สวย as the predicate.
The second practice pair asks for บ้านใหญ่ in this noun-first arrangement. It does not prove that every descriptive construction has exactly one word order. In วันนี้ร้อน, วันนี้ sets the time, 'today'; ร้อน describes the contextual weather. The time expression need not be treated as the grammatical subject of every weather statement.
3. Negating These Properties
Use ไม่ (mai) before the property predicate for the simple negative descriptions shown here. ภาษาไทยไม่ยาก negates ยาก, and the food task asks for อาหารไม่เผ็ด. Do not substitute ไม่ใช่ (mai chai) for that requested ordinary predicate negation. Its identification and corrective uses must be read in their complete constructions; the task is not a blanket prohibition on every use of ไม่ใช่ near a property word.
4. Degree In The Displayed Example
In อาหารอร่อยมาก, มาก (mak - very) follows อร่อย and intensifies the description. Read that degree expression with its predicate. This example does not establish a frequency ranking or make every intensifier interchangeable with มาก.
Examples (5)
- เขาสูง
He is tall.
Word by Word: He [to be] tall
สูง is the property predicate in this simple height statement. There is no separate Thai word for English 'is'; [to be] in the literal gloss is supplied for English readers.
- อาหารอร่อยมาก
The food is very delicious.
Word by Word: Food delicious very
มาก follows อร่อย and intensifies the description in this food example.
- ภาษาไทยไม่ยาก
Thai language is not difficult.
Word by Word: Language Thai not [to be] difficult
ไม่ directly negates the property predicate ยาก in this sentence. The English [to be] annotation in the literal gloss does not add a Thai copula.
- วันนี้ร้อน
Today is hot.
Word by Word: Today [to be] hot
วันนี้ sets the time, 'today'. ร้อน describes the weather understood from context. English 'is' in the translation is not a separate Thai word here.
- แมวตัวนี้ใหญ่
This cat is big.
Word by Word: Cat [classifier] this big
แมวตัวนี้ identifies the cat being described, and ใหญ่ is the property predicate. ตัว is the classifier in this noun-classifier-demonstrative expression.
Common Mistakes
Adding เป็น to the requested simple height statement.
เขาเป็นสูงเขาสูงFor the intended simple description, use เขาสูง without inserting เป็น before สูง. เป็น has other uses, including role or category descriptions and some property constructions. This practice pair does not establish that เป็น is restricted to nouns in every Thai construction.
Putting ใหญ่ before บ้าน in the noun-first arrangement requested here.
ใหญ่บ้านบ้านใหญ่Use บ้านใหญ่ for the arrangement requested here: บ้าน precedes ใหญ่. In context, that string can be the phrase 'big house' or a statement that the house is big. The practice pair does not establish one analysis or word order for every Thai description.
Using ไม่ใช่ instead of ordinary predicate negation in the requested food description.
อาหารไม่ใช่เผ็ดอาหารไม่เผ็ดFor the requested simple statement that the food is not spicy, use อาหารไม่เผ็ด: ไม่ negates เผ็ด directly. The displayed อาหารไม่ใช่เผ็ด does not match that requested ordinary description. Identification or correction with ไม่ใช่ must be assessed in its own context; this pair does not ban it from all constructions involving property words.

Level 1 - เป็นTo Be Someone or Something
Compare เป็น in role or category descriptions with the simple height statement เขาสูง, which does not require it. This contrast is not a rule excluding every property construction with เป็น.
Level 1 - ไม่Not
ไม่ directly negates the property predicates ยาก and เผ็ด in the example and task shown here.
Level 1 - มากVery
Compare มาก after อร่อย in the displayed food example. It intensifies that property without an extra copula.
Level 1 - ไม่ใช่Denying an Identity
Compare ordinary predicate negation with ไม่ and identification or correction with ไม่ใช่ in a complete context. The food task asks for ordinary negation, not every possible corrective construction.
