ถ้า
Conditions with ถ้า
The four examples use ถ้า for an if-condition. One result contains ก็; the other three do not.
How It Works
Read the condition and its linked statement.
- ถ้าฝนตก supplies the rain condition; ผมจะไม่ไป states that the speaker will not go under that condition.
- ถ้าคุณหิว supplies the hunger condition; ก็ connects it to the permission or possibility to eat immediately.
- ถ้าฉันเป็นคุณ sets up the imagined I-were-you comparison; ฉันจะซื้อรถคันนั้น supplies buying that car.
- ถ้ามีเวลา leaves the person with time unstated; เราไปเที่ยวกันไหม asks about going out together.
The rain example contains จะ; compare ก็ in its own linked examples. Among these four natives, ก็ is overt only in the hunger example. Read จะ in its complete future or hypothetical context, without making it compulsory for every condition.
Compare หาก, the question particle ล่ะ and the hypothetical introduction สมมติว่า in their own complete examples. The links do not establish a universal register ranking or an exhaustive list of conditions. The two exercises request the complete bird scenario and the when-arriving clause; preserve their stated tasks without declaring the retained alternatives ungrammatical or the arrival guaranteed.
Examples (4)
- ถ้าฝนตก ผมจะไม่ไป
If it rains, I won't go.
Word by Word: if | rain | fall | I | will | not | go
The rain condition is followed by ผมจะไม่ไป. จะ belongs to the selected future-intention reading; this utterance does not verify rain or an actual decision.
- ถ้าคุณหิว ก็กินได้เลย
If you're hungry, you can eat right away.
Word by Word: if | you | hungry | then | eat | can | right away
ก็ links the hunger condition to กินได้เลย here. The repeated you in the functional translation is inferred in the result clause; no rule requires ก็ in every condition.
- ถ้าฉันเป็นคุณ ฉันจะซื้อรถคันนั้น
If I were you, I would buy that car.
Word by Word: if | I | be | you | I | would | buy | car | classifier | that
Read เป็น in the imagined I-were-you clause. Would is the selected English hypothetical rendering of จะ in the result; the clause does not state an actual car purchase.
- ถ้ามีเวลา เราไปเที่ยวกันไหม
If [you] have time, shall we go out together?
Word by Word: if | have time | we | go out | together | question particle
[You] is the selected implied participant in ถ้ามีเวลา. The inclusive we reading fits the invitation เราไปเที่ยวกันไหม, ending in ไหม; no register or participant identity is proved by the particle.
Common Mistakes
Giving only the starred bird fragment instead of the requested complete scenario.
ถ้าผม *เป็น* นก (intended: If I were a bird)ถ้าผมเป็นนก ผมจะบินไปหาคุณThe task requests ถ้าผมเป็นนก ผมจะบินไปหาคุณ for If I were a bird, I would fly to you, including จะ in the result. The retained ถ้าผม เป็น นก (intended: If I were a bird) displays the same เป็น verb with asterisks and an English note; it is not evidence of a different Thai inflected form or an ungrammatical conditional clause.
Replacing the requested when-arriving clause with an if-condition.
ถ้าผมถึงบ้าน ผมจะโทรหาคุณเมื่อผมถึงบ้าน ผมจะโทรหาคุณThe task requests เมื่อผมถึงบ้าน ผมจะโทรหาคุณ, with เมื่อ for When I get home, I will call you. ถ้าผมถึงบ้าน ผมจะโทรหาคุณ is a meaningful if-I-get-home condition, but it does not reproduce the requested when wording. Neither connector guarantees the real arrival or call.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use 'ถ้า' (if), you need to be able to construct basic sentences in Thai. It is also helpful to understand how 'ก็' functions as a linker, as it is the most common way to introduce the result of the 'if' condition.
