ทำไม

Why

Level 1

ทำไม (thammai) asks 'Why?' The initial questions here ask for a reason or motivation. Final-position questions can ask about purpose or express a challenge in context; position alone does not determine the speaker's attitude.

How It Works

ทำไม asks 'Why?' In constructions that keep a question word in the position of the information being asked about, placement follows the particular question. The reason questions shown with ทำไม put it at the beginning.

1. The Linker 'ถึง'
In the displayed study question, ทำไม is paired with the word ถึง. The structure ทำไม...ถึง... asks 'How come...' or 'Why is it that...'. Using ถึง here does not mean literally reaching a destination; the first example also shows a reason question without this linker.

2. Word Order and Nuance

  • Beginning: Can ask about a cause or motivation, with the intended reading supplied by context. (e.g., ทำไมคุณไม่มา? - Why didn't you come?) Initial position alone does not guarantee a neutral tone.
  • End: Can ask about purpose or, in a suitable context, form a challenge. (e.g., มาทำไม! - Why did you even come?!) The exclamation here suggests a challenge; final position alone does not establish aggression.

3. Another Reason Question
ทำไม asks for a reason in the displayed questions. Another way to ask for a reason is เพราะอะไร (literally 'because of what'); it is not restricted to formal writing.

Examples (5)

  1. ทำไมคุณไม่บอกผม?

    Why didn't you tell me?

Word by Word: Why you not tell me?

This initial question asks why the listener did not tell the speaker. Its attitude depends on the situation; initial position alone does not make it neutral.

  2. ทำไมถึงอยากเรียนภาษาไทย?

Why do you want to study Thai?

Word by Word: Why [linker] want study language Thai?

Here ถึง links the initial question word to the stated desire to study Thai. It belongs to this reason-question pattern rather than expressing a destination.

  3. ทำไมเขามาสาย?

    Why is he late?

Word by Word: Why he come late?

A simple inquiry into the reason for someone's state or action.

  4. ทำแบบนี้ทำไม!

    Why did you do this?!

Word by Word: Do like this why!

In this exclamatory example, the question can convey a challenge or annoyance about the action. Final-position ทำไม can also ask about purpose in other contexts; the position alone does not guarantee anger.

  5. ทำไมวันนี้ร้อนจัง?

Why is it so hot today?

Word by Word: Why today hot very?

Asking for a reason regarding the weather or environment.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding ไหม to the requested open question about the reason for going.

    ทำไมคุณไปไหม?
    ทำไมคุณถึงไป?

The requested question asks for a reason, so use the displayed ทำไม question with ถึง. The yes/no particle ไหม does not supply that reason-question structure. This contrast concerns the shown exercise, rather than every sentence containing both kinds of question.

  • Ask “Why Aren’t You Eating?”

    ทำไมคุณกิน?
    ทำไมคุณไม่กิน?

Both questions can be grammatical, but they ask about opposite situations. ทำไมคุณกิน? asks for a reason for eating. The requested question asks for a reason for not eating, so use ทำไมคุณไม่กิน? with ไม่ before กิน. This contrast concerns the negative predicate and does not declare a final-position ทำไม question ungrammatical or aggressive.
