นี้ / นั้น / โน้น

This That and That Over There

Level 1

นี้ (níi) = This
นั้น (nán) = That
โน้น (nóon) = That over there
These selected forms contrast nearer and more distant reference; the situation or discourse supplies the referent.

How It Works

นี้, นั้น, And โน้น
These selected demonstratives indicate 'this', 'that', and 'that over there'. In a spatial pointing situation, นี้ indicates a nearer referent and โน้น a more distant one. นั้น can indicate something farther away or something identified in the discourse. The contrast is not a fixed measurement, and นั้น does not require the referent to be beside the listener.

Read The Whole Noun Phrase
บ้านหลังนั้น has noun + classifier + demonstrative: หลัง is the classifier used with บ้าน here. ภูเขาลูกโน้น uses ลูก before โน้น. หนังสือเล่มนี้ illustrates the same ordering with a book. The first example is different: คนนี้ contains คน only once, followed directly by นี้. It does not visibly contain a separate noun occurrence and a second classifier occurrence.

In the counted-book task, หนังสือสามเล่มนี้ places สาม and เล่ม before นี้. หมาใหญ่ตัวนั้น illustrates a noun, descriptive modifier, classifier, and demonstrative. These are useful patterns, not a rule that every Thai modifier has one position or that every noun-demonstrative phrase requires a separate classifier. Classifier use and the interpretation of a phrase depend on its construction and context.

Which One And This One
หนังสือเล่มไหน uses the book classifier before ไหน, 'which'. Compare that complete question with หนังสือเล่มนี้ rather than treating every use of ไหน as a substitution in one formula. The linked general classifier supplies context for อัน. The existing forms อันนี้ and อันนั้น can refer to a thing understood from context; อัน is not a universal replacement for every unknown classifier.

Time And Manner Expressions
The linked nouns that count themselves provides a comparison for nouns that also serve as classifiers. In the displayed time expression วันนี้, วัน and นี้ form 'today'; no second วัน is written. This is not proof that every noun with a repeated-noun classifier follows the same shortened pattern. Compare แบบ in แบบนี้, 'like this', and อย่าง in อย่างนั้น, 'like that'. Learn each full construction without adding a classifier solely because a demonstrative is present.

Groups And Counted Sets
คนเหล่านี้ refers to 'these people': เหล่า contributes the group expression and นี้ does not change its written form to mark plural. พวก can also form a group expression, but neither word mechanically replaces every classifier in every construction. The preserved counted phrase หนังสือสามเล่มนี้ uses a numeral and a book classifier to identify the set being discussed.

Compare Written Forms And Functions
The selected forms นี้, นั้น, and โน้น are distinguished in standard descriptions from the falling-tone forms in demonstrative pronouns. Compare the standalone pointing word in นี่คือหนังสือ with the modifier after a classifier in หนังสือเล่มนี้. The difference involves function and context as well as the written tone mark; it is not a claim that a form has only one possible syntactic function. The spellings นู้น, นู่น, and เนี่ย belong to a fuller account of variation. They are not a license to replace every โน้น, โน่น, นี่, or นี้ interchangeably, nor do these examples establish pronunciation frequencies.

Places And Times
With ที่, compare the complete place expressions ที่นี่, ที่นั่น, and ที่โน่น. ตรงนี้, ตรงนั้น, and ตรงโน้น are also place expressions; the choice follows the intended location and context rather than an unconditional rule to substitute one series for the other. With ตอน, ตอนนี้ indicates 'now' or 'this time' and ตอนนั้น indicates 'then' or 'at that time'. วันนี้ in the fourth example is another complete time expression.

The Three Requested Corrections
For the first task, place นี้ after คน to form คนนี้. For the second, identify the counted books with หนังสือสามเล่มนี้. For the third, choose หมาตัวนี้ for the stated meaning “this dog”; หมาตัวนั้น means “that dog” in this contrast. Both phrases use ตัว and can be grammatical, but they do not express the same requested meaning.

Examples (5)

  1. คนนี้เป็นเพื่อนของฉัน

    This person is my friend.

Word by Word: person this be friend of I

คน occurs once in คนนี้, followed directly by นี้. The phrase identifies 'this person'; do not analyze the displayed text as a noun คน plus a separately repeated classifier คน.

  2. ฉันชอบบ้านหลังนั้น

    I like that house.

Word by Word: I like house [classifier] that

บ้านหลังนั้น contains บ้าน, the classifier หลัง, and นั้น. The phrase identifies 'that house'; the sentence alone does not specify the house's exact distance or position beside the listener.

  3. ภูเขาลูกโน้นสูงมาก

That mountain over there is very high.

Word by Word: mountain [classifier] that-over-there high very

ลูก is the classifier used with ภูเขา here, and โน้น indicates the mountain over there. The sentence points to a distant referent without measuring its distance from either participant.

  4. วันนี้อากาศดี

    Today the weather is good.

Word by Word: day this weather good

วันนี้ is the complete time expression 'today'. วัน occurs once before นี้; compare the linked noun that counts itself without inferring that the example contains a second วัน or licenses omission in every classifier construction.

  5. คนเหล่านี้คือใคร

    Who are these people?

Word by Word: person [plural-group] this be who

คนเหล่านี้ refers to the group 'these people'. เหล่า supplies the group expression; นี้ keeps its written form, and the example does not give a universal substitution rule for all classifiers.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing นี้ before คน in the requested phrase 'this person'.

    นี้คน
    คนนี้

For this task, use คนนี้ with นี้ after คน. The correction concerns the order of these two words, not a rule for every word described as an adjective.

  • Placing นี้ before the numeral-classifier sequence in the requested counted-book phrase.

    หนังสือนี้สามเล่ม
    หนังสือสามเล่มนี้

Use หนังสือสามเล่มนี้ for the counted books in this task: noun + number + classifier + demonstrative. หมาใหญ่ตัวนั้น is the displayed comparison with a descriptive modifier. These patterns do not make the demonstrative the last word of every complete Thai sentence.

  • Say “This Dog”.

    หมาตัวนั้น
    หมาตัวนี้

หมาตัวนี้ means “this dog” in this task. หมาตัวนั้น means “that dog”, so it does not match the requested meaning. Both phrases are grammatical and use ตัว; the choice here concerns นี้ and นั้น.

Learn This First

To understand Thai demonstratives (this/that/that over there), you need to know that they are placed after the noun, often following a classifier. You also need a basic understanding of tone marks, as these specific words rely on the Mai Tho mark for their identity.
