Negation with หา ...

Level 5

ไม่ is a negative construction illustrated here by หาได้เป็นเช่นนั้นไม่, “It is by no means so.” In หารู้ไม่, it denies knowing. The separate หาไม่แล้ว in the command example means “otherwise.” These examples teach the forms without making every use a legal prohibition or an everyday-speech error.

How It Works

1. Read the Complete Negative Frame
In หาได้เป็นเช่นนั้นไม่, the sequence หาได้ ... ไม่ denies that something is so. Read ได้ as part of this construction rather than importing a literal “get,” completed achievement, or permission into the translation. The linked เป็น supplies “be” inside the frame. In การกระทำดังกล่าวหาได้มีผลทางกฎหมายไม่, the sentence denies a legal effect; the construction itself does not add a future “shall” or validate a current legal rule.

2. Follow Each Sentence’s Form
หารู้ไม่ denies knowing in the danger example. The character’s joy and the approaching danger come from the rest of the sentence, not from a guaranteed dramatic meaning of the frame. คำกล่าวหานี้จะว่าเป็นความจริงก็หาไม่ rejects describing the accusation as true: here the preceding clause is followed by ก็หาไม่. The separate identity-negation form ไม่ใช่ is a comparison, not something this frame must replace in every formal context.

3. Distinguish “Otherwise”
In จงทำตามคำสั่ง หาไม่แล้วเจ้าจะถูกลงโทษ, หาไม่แล้ว links the instruction to the stated alternative, “otherwise you will be punished.” The negative consequence is expressed by this sentence. Do not treat punishment or another bad result as part of every occurrence of หาไม่.

4. Match the Requested Form
These forms occur in literary material, but a fixed century, frequency, dramatic voice, or legal authority does not follow from the spelling alone. For the first exercise, the requested wording is ไม่หิวเลย; หาหิวไม่ does not meet that task, although a marked negative frame is not inherently ungrammatical. For the second exercise, reproduce the displayed หาได้ ... ไม่ frame with ไม่ at its close. Other constructions need their own context.

Examples (5)

It is by no means so.

Word by Word: [negative-frame-opening] be like that [negative-frame-closing]

ไม่ denies that something is as stated. No separate achievement or future prohibition is inferred from ได้ here.

He was preoccupied with joy, little knowing that danger was approaching him.

Word by Word: He preoccupied glad; [negative-frame-opening] know [negative-frame-closing] that danger [ongoing] come reach [him]

หารู้ไม่ expresses his lack of awareness. กำลังมาถึงตัว describes danger approaching him; the complete sentence supplies this ongoing situation.

This accusation is by no means true.

Word by Word: Accusation this, to say [it] is truth, [link] [negative frame]

The sentence rejects calling the accusation true. Notice ก็หาไม่ after the preceding clause; the form differs from the simple opening-and-closing frame in example one.

Follow the orders; otherwise, you will be punished.

Word by Word: [command] do follow order; otherwise then you will [passive] punish

หาไม่แล้ว means “otherwise” here. The command and punishment are expressed by the surrounding words; they are not universal meanings of the conjunction.

The aforementioned action has no legal effect.

Word by Word: Action aforementioned [negative-frame-opening] have effect in law [negative-frame-closing]

ไม่ negates having a legal effect in this grammar example. ทางกฎหมาย gives the legal domain. The sentence alone does not establish an actual law or a compulsory future reading.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a different negative frame when the exercise requests

The task asks for “not hungry at all” using ไม่ before หิว and เลย after it. หาหิวไม่ uses a different frame, so it does not satisfy this request. This is a construction-choice exercise, not a claim that any conversational use of a marked frame is ungrammatical.

  • Failing to reproduce the requested หาได้ ...

For this task, use หาได้เป็นเช่นนั้นไม่: the opening is หาได้, and ไม่ closes the displayed frame after เป็นเช่นนั้น. หาไม่เป็นเช่นนั้น does not reproduce that requested sequence. The exercise does not judge every other possible construction or context.
