As Much as

Level 4Sounds Like jati ... tyati

त्यति means as much as ... that much.

How It Works

जति means as much or as many as, and त्यति means that much. They work as a pair.

  • To say the more ... the more:
  • To say as much as:
  • To say as many as:

Add धेरै or कम to show more or less. नै after त्यति stresses an exact match.

Both parts stay the same for every person and number. Nepali uses त्यति, not the Hindi उतना. The first clause can also stand alone with a plain amount: जति चाहिन्छ, लिनुहोस् (take as much as you need).

Examples (5)

    जति धेरै and त्यति धेरै are matched.

Take as much tea as you need.

    The pair sets an amount.

The farther we go, the colder it gets.

    The pair compares two changes.

The more spice we added, the tastier the food got.

The second clause has its own subject.

Cook food for exactly as many people as come.

    नै stresses the match.

Common Mistakes

  • A learner uses the question word

जति is the relative word, not कति.
