जहाँ ... त्यहाँ means where ... there.

How It Works

जहाँ means where and त्यहाँ means there. Together they tie a place to an event.

The verbs follow their own doers. The two clauses can have different doers and different tenses.

जहाँ is not a question word. To ask where, use कहाँ: तपाईं कहाँ जानुहुन्छ?

In speech, त्यहाँ is sometimes left out: जहाँ तपाईं जानुहुन्छ, म पनि जान्छु.

The place can be a town, a shop or a room: जहाँ मेला लाग्छ, त्यहाँ मान्छे जम्मा हुन्छन्.

जहाँ चिया पाइन्छ, त्यहाँ भीड हुन्छ।
Where tea is sold, there is a crowd.
जहाँ names the place and त्यहाँ answers it.
जहाँ तिमी बस्छौ, त्यहाँ म पनि बस्छु।
Where you live, I will live too.
The doers differ in the two clauses.
जहाँ बाटो छैन, त्यहाँ हामी हिँडेर जान्छौँ।
Where there is no road, we go on foot.
छैन sits inside the जहाँ clause.
जहाँ मान्छे धेरै हुन्छन्, त्यहाँ आवाज पनि धेरै हुन्छ।
Where there are many people, there is much noise too.
The second clause has its own subject.
जहाँ तपाईं जानुहुन्छ, त्यहाँ म पनि जान्छु।
Where you go, I go too.
The polite तपाईं takes जानुहुन्छ.

A learner uses the question word कहाँ.
कहाँ चिया पाइन्छ, त्यहाँ भीड हुन्छ।
जहाँ चिया पाइन्छ, त्यहाँ भीड हुन्छ।
जहाँ is the relative word, not कहाँ.
