-छु / -छौ / -छ

The Simple Present

Level 1Sounds Like chu, -chau ra -cha

The simple present has one ending for each doer.

How It Works

To find the stem, drop -नु from the dictionary form: गर्नु gives गर्, and पिउनु gives पिउ. Then add the ending.

DoerEndingExample
म (I)-छुम चिया पिउँछु।
तिमी (you)-छौतिमी चिया पिउँछौ।
ऊ (he)-छऊ भात खान्छ।
हामी (we)-छौँहामी चिया पिउँछौँ।
उनीहरू (they)-छन्उनीहरू काम गर्छन्।

The form says what someone does as a habit: म बिहान चिया पिउँछु. It also says what will happen soon: भोलि म जान्छु.

For तपाईं and उहाँ the ending is -नुहुन्छ. When ऊ, उनी or तिमी is a woman or girl, the ending is a little different, while म and हामी never change. Those have their own entries.

Verbs such as मन पर्छ and चाहिन्छ work differently: the person takes लाई, and the verb follows the thing, as in मलाई चिया मन पर्छ. The stem sometimes changes before the ending. The next entry shows how.

    म चिया पिउँछु।

The verb must match the doer. म takes -छु.
