This and That

Level 1Sounds Like yō, tyō, yī ra tī

यो means this and त्यो means that, and यी and ती are their plurals.

How It Works

Two words cover this and that: one for near and one for far.

OneMore than one
nearयो (this)यी (these)
farत्यो (that)ती (those)

The word can stand alone, as in यो के हो? (what is this?), or sit before a noun, as in यो किताब (this book). It is also the word for it, so there is no need for a separate it: त्यो राम्रो छ means that is nice, or it is nice.

Adjectives and verbs follow the number. With यी and ती they usually take plural forms: ती किताबहरू राम्रा छन्. In everyday speech you may also hear यो and त्यो used for more than one thing.

To point to a place, use यहाँ (here) and त्यहाँ (there).
