छ / हो
Choosing Between छ and हो
हो tells what something is, and छ tells where it is or what it is like.
How It Works
Both verbs are forms of to be, and learners often swap them. Use this check.
| You want to say | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| who or what something is | हो | म शिक्षक हुँ |
| where something is | छ | म घरमा छु |
| what it is like | छ | घर ठूलो छ |
| that something exists | छ | घरमा चिया छ |
The same noun can appear with both verbs: यो घर हो (this is a house) and त्यो घर ठूलो छ (that house is big).
The two verbs have similar forms in the plural and with respect, so listen for the first letter. हो forms start with ह: हुँ, हौ, हुन्. छ forms start with छ: छु, छौ, छन्. The respectful form हुनुहुन्छ is the same for both, because हुनु is the verb underneath. The sentence meaning tells you which one is meant.
