के for Yes or No Questions

Yes or No Questions

Level 1Sounds Like kē + vākya

Put के at the start of a statement to ask a yes or no question.

How It Works

Start with a statement: तपाईं नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ (you are Nepali). Put के in front, and you have a question: के तपाईं नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ?

StatementQuestion

के here does not mean what. It is only a question marker. The same के, used with another word, does mean what: यो के हो? (what is this?). Look at what follows it. Before a full statement, it marks a yes or no question.

The marker is optional. तपाईं चिया पिउनुहुन्छ? with a rising voice is a question too, and it is very common in speech. Answer either with the verb: पिउँछु or पिउँदिनँ.

Examples (5)

    Are you Nepali?

के at the start turns the statement into a question.

    Do you drink tea?

The statement keeps its order after के.

    Is this your house?

The answer is हो or होइन.

    Do you drink tea?

Without के, a rising voice makes the question.

    Is there water at home?

The answer is छ or छैन.
