-ून बसणे

Ending Up Doing Something

Level 5Sounds Like ̔ūna basaṇē

The subject goes with बसणे, and the person who did it takes no -ने, even in the past: तो राजीनामा देऊन बसला.

How It Works

Take the -ून form of a verb, which means having done, and add बसणे. The action is complete, and the speaker did not plan it or did not think first.

SubjectForm
मी (man)खर्च करून बसलो
मी (woman)दाबून बसले
तो / तीदेऊन बसला / बसली
आम्हीदुखावून बसलो
आजोबा (respect)देऊन बसले

बसणे is a verb of the doer, so it agrees with the subject, and the person takes no -ने. Compare त्याने राजीनामा दिला (he handed in his resignation) with तो राजीनामा देऊन बसला (he went and resigned). The second has no -ने.

Words such as चुकून (by mistake), नकळत (without knowing) and रागाच्या भरात (in a fit of anger) often come with this pattern, because the action is rash.

The -ून verb does not change. Only बसणे takes the tense and the person. The object stays in front of the -ून verb: सगळे पैसे खर्च करून बसलो.

Do not use it for a plan. To say that you spent the money on purpose, use the plain past: मी पैसे खर्च केले.
