How It Works

घेणे means “take”, and the pattern keeps that idea: you do the thing and keep the result. नीट समजून घे means “take the understanding in properly”.

There are two uses. The first is doing something for yourself: writing down an address, resting, eating a little first. The second is having something done for you by someone else: cutting your hair, repairing a phone.

When another person receives the benefit, use -ून देणे: मी तुला पत्ता लिहून दिला.

The past form of घेणे agrees with an object that has no -ला; an object with -ला makes it neuter, as in त्याने मुलाला बोलावून घेतले. The doer takes -ने or -नी when it is a third person: त्याने केस कापून घेतले. The speaker with मी takes no -ने.

Commands use घे to a friend and घ्या to an elder or to several people: ऐकून घे, लिहून घ्या. The words आधी (first) and नीट (properly) often come with them.

    समजून घे asks the listener to take the understanding in.

  2. मी पत्ता लिहून घेतला.

    I wrote down the address for myself.

    घेतला agrees with पत्ता, a masculine noun.

  3. त्याने केस कापून घेतले.

    He got his hair cut.

    घेतले agrees with केस, a masculine plural; the haircut is for him.

  4. मी थोडा आराम करून घेतो.

    I'll take a little rest first. A man is speaking.

    करून घेतो gives the rest to the speaker himself.

  5. मी आधी थोडे खाऊन घेते.

    I'll eat a little first. A woman is speaking.

    खाऊन घेते ends in -ते because the speaker is a woman.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out -ून.

    मी पत्ता लिहिले घेतला.
    मी पत्ता लिहून घेतला.

    The first verb takes -ून before घेणे.

  • Not matching घेतला to the object.

    मी पत्ता लिहून घेतली.
    मी पत्ता लिहून घेतला.

    पत्ता is masculine, so the past form is घेतला.
