-त होता

An Action Underway Then

Level 3Sounds Like ta hōtā

होता shows who was acting: होतो for a man, होते for a woman, and so on.

How It Works

The -त form says that an action was in progress. होता then puts it in the past and agrees with the person who was acting.

WhoForm
मी (man)करत होतो
मी (woman)करत होते
तू (man / woman)करत होतास / करत होतीस
तो / तीकरत होता / करत होती
आम्हीकरत होतो
ते (men)करत होते
मुले (children)करत होती
आजी, त्याकरत होत्या

Respect takes the plural: आजी वाचत होत्या.

A masculine word such as पाऊस takes होता: पाऊस पडत होता. A feminine word takes होती, and a neuter plural such as मुले takes होती: मुले खेळत होती.

Often a second clause gives the moment that cut in: तो आला तेव्हा मी चहा करत होते. (I was making tea when he came.)

The negative adds नव्हता: मी चहा करत नव्हतो.
