-णार होतो

Was Going to

Level 4Sounds Like ṇāra hōtō

The next clause often tells what stopped the plan, and पण joins them.

How It Works

Use this pattern for what was going to happen. The sentence often has two parts: what was going to happen, and what got in the way.

DoerForm
मी (a man)येणार होतो
मी (a woman)येणार होते
तोयेणार होता
तीयेणार होती
आम्हीयेणार होतो
तू (a man / a woman)येणार होतास / येणार होतीस
तुम्हीयेणार होतात
ते (men)येणार होते
त्या (women)येणार होत्या
मुलेयेणार होती

The -णार form is the one you know from -णार आहे: ती येणार आहे. For the past, only आहे changes to होती.

The pattern is not the future. The plan belongs to the past, and the speaker often adds what got in the way. The English is “was going to”.

A verb with an object works the same way, and there is no -ने: ती फोन करणार होती, पण विसरली.

The next clause often starts with पण (but) and names what got in the way: पण पाऊस आला.

A plan that is still open uses आहे: उद्या मी येणार आहे. (I'm coming tomorrow.) Only the helper changes when the plan belongs to the past.
