त्याने पत्र लिहिले
Completed Transitive Actions
The doer takes -ने, and the verb follows the object.
How It Works
| Object | One | More than one |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | त्याने आंबा खाल्ला. | त्याने आंबे खाल्ले. |
| feminine | तिने पोळी केली. | तिने पोळ्या केल्या. |
| neuter | त्याने पत्र लिहिले. | त्याने पत्रे लिहिली. |
With these verbs the verb follows the object. तिने आंबा खाल्ला has a woman doing the action, but the verb ends in -ला because आंबा is masculine.
When the object ends in -ला, the verb stays neuter and does not change: त्याने मुलाला पाहिले (He saw the boy).
This pattern is for verbs with an object, such as लिहिणे, करणे and खाणे. A few verbs follow the doer even with an object: तो काय म्हणाला?, ती खोटे बोलली, तो चावी विसरला, मी मराठी शिकलो (a man). पिणे is heard both ways: मी चहा प्यायलो (a man) or प्यायले (a woman) follows the doer, and त्याने पाणी प्यायले follows the object. A verb like जाणे has no object and matches the doer.
The doer takes these forms with -ने: तो becomes त्याने, ती becomes तिने, ते (more than one) becomes त्यांनी, and a name takes -ने: सईने.
The usual order is doer, object, verb. The object can move to the front for emphasis, and the verb still matches it: पत्र त्याने लिहिले.
