होएत for Guessing

Guessing with होएत

Level 4Sounds Like hō'ēta (anumāna)

-ल form plus होएत means "must be" or "must have".

How It Works

The -ल form shows something is done or in a state, like बैसल (seated) or लागल (felt). Add होएत to turn it into a guess: "it must be" or "it must have".

DoerFormExample
plain person, thing-ल होएतसुतल होएत
respected person-ल होएताहपहुँचल होएताह
  • A hungry child: बच्चा केँ भूख लागल होएत।
  • A respected person: बाबूजी आब घर पहुँचल होएताह।
  • A thing: बाहर बड्ड ठंढा होएत।

होएत also follows an adjective or a noun: ठंढा होएत, नीक लोक होएताह. The guess can be about now (भूख लागल होएत) or about a finished action (गेल होएत, "must have gone"). Context tells which one. With अहाँ or हम, we do not usually guess, so this pattern mostly appears for other people and things.

Do not use the Hindi होगा. In Maithili the future of "to be" is होएत, and it has no gender.
