Postpositions After Nouns
Maithili uses words after the noun, not before it, and the noun stays the same.
How It Works
English puts small words before the noun (in the house). Maithili puts them after (house in), and these words are called postpositions.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| मे | in | घर मे |
| पर | on, at | टेबुल पर |
| सँ | from, with | दरभंगा सँ |
| केँ | to (a person) | नेना केँ |
| लेल | for | अहाँ लेल |
| -क | of | चाहक दोकान |
The noun does not change before any of these. Hindi लड़का turns into लड़के before में, but Maithili बेटा stays बेटा: बेटा केँ.
Only -क is joined to the noun. Every other word is a separate word. Pronouns have their own forms before these words: हमरा, ओकरा, हुनका.

How It Connects
Learn This First
A postposition sits between its noun and the final verb, so the basic sentence order comes first.
