Respect in the Past: गेलाह and गेल

Level 2Sounds Like gēlāha, gēlīha ā gēla

After a moving verb, the third-person past ends in -लाह, -लीह or -ल.

How It Works

Whoजाएबपहुँचब
a respected manगेलाहपहुँचलाह
a respected womanगेलीहपहुँचलीह
a child, a thing, anyone plainगेलपहुँचल

Choose the form from how you speak of the person, not from age alone. Parents, grandparents, teachers and guests get -लाह or -लीह. A little child, a friend you call तोँ, or an animal gets -ल.

This split is only for verbs that take no object, such as go, come, arrive, sit and sleep. Verbs that take an object, such as eat, read and do, use a different ending that does not show gender. The next entry covers them.

For हम and अहाँ the ending is -लहुँ, as in हम गेलहुँ.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the object-verb ending after a moving verb.

    बाबूजी बजार गेलनि।
    बाबूजी बजार गेलाह।

With बाबूजी as the person who went, say गेलाह. गेलनि does exist, but its -नि shows respect for someone else, as in हुनक बेटा गेलनि (his son went).
