बैसल छी

States That Last: बैसल and सुतल

Level 3Sounds Like baisala chī

The -ल form with "to be" tells you what position or state someone is in now.

How It Works

The pattern is the same as the perfect of moving verbs, but the meaning is a state that lasts.

VerbStateMeaning
बैसबबैसल छीI am sitting
सुतबसुतल अछिis asleep
खुजबखुजल अछिis open
जागबजागल छथिis awake

Choose the "to be" word as usual: छी for हम and अहाँ, छथि for a respected person, अछि for a plain person or a thing.

Compare the two present forms. बउआ सुतल अछि says he is asleep now. बउआ सुतैत अछि says he sleeps, as a habit. For something happening this moment, the progressive is clearest: सुति रहल अछि.

The same -ल form also describes nouns: पाकल आम is a ripe mango.

    बउआ सुतल अछि।

सुतैत अछि means he sleeps as a habit. For "he is asleep now", use सुतल अछि.
