गेल / कएल / भेल

Common Irregular Past Stems

Level 2Sounds Like gēla, ka'ēla ā bhēla

A few common verbs change their stem in the past.

How It Works

VerbPast stemहम / अहाँPlain third person
जाएबगेल-गेलहुँगेल
आएबअएल-अएलहुँआएल
खाएबखएल-खएलहुँखएलक
करबकएल-कएलहुँकएलक
होएबभेल-भेलहुँभेल
देबदेल-देलहुँदेलक
लेबलेल-लेलहुँलेलक

Note आएब: it is अएल- before an ending (अएलहुँ, अएलाह) but आएल when nothing follows. The word भेल also means "it happened" on its own: की भेल? What happened?

Do not add -ल to the dictionary stem of these verbs. Do not write जाएल or होएल: the standard past forms are गेल and भेल. Then add the person endings from the earlier entries to the stem, which already ends in -ल: -हुँ (गेलहुँ), -आह (गेलाह), -ईह (गेलीह), -नि (कएलनि) and -क (कएलक). The plain गेल needs no ending.

    हम बजार गेलहुँ।

    जाएब uses the stem गेल-, never जाएल-.
