जाउ / करू

Polite Commands

Level 1Sounds Like jā'u ā karū

With अहाँ, a polite command ends in -उ or -ू.

How It Works

This command is the one you use at home with guests, elders and strangers. It is polite without any extra word.

VerbCommand
जाएबजाउ
आएबआउ
खाएबखाउ
करबकरू
पढ़बपढ़ू
देखबदेखू
बैसबबैसू
देबदिअ
लेबलिअ

Put नहि or जुनि before the command to say don't. Add कृपया only in formal writing; spoken Maithili does not need it.

The command is the same for one person or many: अहाँ सभ आउ. Hindi spells the same idea with -ओ (जाओ, खाओ). Some Maithili print also has जाओ, but write जाउ and खाउ.

Examples (5)

  1. आउ, बैसू।

    Come in, sit down.

आउ and बैसू are the usual welcome.

  2. हमरा पानि दिअ।

    Please give me water.

दिअ is the command form of देब.

  3. ई किताब पढ़ू।

    Read this book.

    पढ़ू takes -ू.

  4. आब भात खाउ।

    Now eat your rice.

    खाउ takes -उ after आ.

  5. ई लिअ आ घर जाउ।

    Take this and go home.

    लिअ and जाउ come from लेब and जाएब.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the Hindi command ending.

    चलो, जाओ।
    चलू, जाउ।

    चलो is Hindi. Write चलू and जाउ.
