со оглед на тоа што

Given That

Level 6Sounds Like so ogled na toa što

Со оглед на тоа што means "given that" or "considering that". Со оглед на тоа што доцниме, да земеме такси. (Given that we are late, let's take a taxi.)

How It Works

The parts. Оглед is related to гледа (look), so со оглед на is roughly "looking at". Because на is a preposition, a verb cannot follow it directly. Before a clause, add тоа што: со оглед на тоа што + a full sentence. This is the same pattern as in тоа што and тоа дека. Formal writing also uses со оглед на тоа дека and со оглед на фактот дека.

Before a noun. Со оглед на времето, натпреварот се одложува. (In view of the weather, the match is being postponed.)

Where it goes. Usually at the start, with a comma after the clause: Со оглед на тоа што е празник, банките не работат. It can also come after the main clause, where it often means "considering": Резултатот е добар, со оглед на тоа што тимот играше без двајца играчи.

How it differs from бидејќи. Бидејќи and затоа што simply give a reason and fit any conversation. Со оглед на тоа што presents the reason as a fact to take into account, and it sounds formal or careful. It is very common in news, reports and official letters; in a chat with friends, бидејќи sounds more natural.

Do not mix it up with без оглед на. Без оглед на means the opposite: "regardless of". Со оглед на says that the fact matters; без оглед на says that it does not.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out тоа што before a clause.

Со оглед на доцниме, да земеме такси.
Со оглед на тоа што доцниме, да земеме такси.

На is a preposition, so a verb cannot follow it directly. Тоа што turns the clause into something на can take.

  • Using без оглед на when you mean given that.

Без оглед на тоа што врне, ќе останеме дома. (meaning: because it is raining)
Со оглед на тоа што врне, ќе останеме дома.

Без оглед на means regardless of, so it says that the rain does not matter. To give the rain as the reason, use со оглед на.
