Noun-Based Formal Style
Plain: Владата одлучи да ги намали цените. · Noun-based: Владата донесе одлука за намалување на цените. (The government decided to cut prices.)
How It Works
Turning verbs into nouns. Official texts often name an action with a verbal noun rather than a verb:
- Рокот за доставување на пријавите е 15 мај. (The deadline for submitting applications is 15 May.) Plain: Пријавите треба да се достават до 15 мај.
- Се работи на подобрување на услугите. (Work is under way on improving the services.) Plain: Ги подобруваме услугите.
Light verbs. A second tool pairs a general verb with an action noun:
- донесе одлука — decide (одлучи)
- даде изјава — make a statement (изјави)
- изврши проверка — carry out a check (провери)
- изврши увид во — inspect (прегледа)
- има намера — intend (намерава)
Purpose and reason. Formal writing also builds purpose and reason phrases from nouns: заради подобрување на квалитетот (in order to improve quality), where everyday language uses за да and a verb: за да го подобриме квалитетот.
Static and heavy. Nouns present actions as fixed things, which suits laws, reports and applications. Compare Веста дека пристигнал се прошири брзо with the noun-based Веста за неговото пристигнување се прошири брзо (The news of his arrival spread quickly). Long chains of nouns such as вршење контрола на спроведувањето на мерките are hard to follow, so everyday writing prefers verbs. When you read one, find the verbal noun and turn it back into a verb.
