поради / заради
Because of
To say because of with a noun, use поради or заради: Поради дождот не излеговме. (Because of the rain, we did not go out.)
How It Works
Cause with a noun
- Поради дождот не излеговме. (Because of the rain, we did not go out.)
- Возот доцни поради снегот. (The train is late because of the snow.)
- Продавницата е затворена поради реновирање. (The shop is closed for renovation.)
The cause can come first or last in the sentence.
Заради: cause or purpose
Заради can mean because of, as in Заради тебе го пропуштив автобусот. (Because of you I missed the bus.) It can also mean for the sake of or for the purpose of: Го направив тоа заради тебе. (I did it for you.) Context tells you which.
With a clause
These words cannot be followed directly by a verb. Use a conjunction instead (see бидејќи; затоа што), or the phrase поради тоа што:
- Бидејќи врнеше, не излеговме. (Because it was raining, we did not go out.)
- Поради тоа што бев болен, не дојдов на работа. (Because I was ill, I did not come to work.)
For a cause that is a feeling, such as crying for joy, Macedonian often uses од (see од за причина). For a good cause, благодарение на means thanks to (see благодарение на; во врска со; во однос на).

Here заради gives the purpose or the person it was done for, not a cause.

Word by Word: Because-of that what I-was ill, not I-came to work.
