მეჩვენება means it seems to me, often about something you are not sure of.

How It Works

What seems true follows in a რომ clause with an ordinary verb: მეჩვენება, რომ აქ ცივა (it feels cold in here to me).

მომეჩვენა often means you are not sure your eyes or ears were right: მომეჩვენა, რომ ვიღაცამ დამიძახა (I thought someone called my name). გეჩვენება on its own tells someone they are imagining things.

Compare მგონი (I think, maybe), the everyday hedge. მეჩვენება is more personal: it is how something looks or feels to you.

  2. მომეჩვენა, რომ ვიღაცამ დამიძახა.

    I thought someone called my name.

    The past მომეჩვენა.

  3. გეჩვენება, აქ არავინ არის.

    You're imagining it; there's nobody here.

    გეჩვენება: you are imagining it.

  4. ბავშვს ეჩვენება, რომ ოთახში ვიღაც არის.

    The child thinks there's someone in the room.

    The child is dative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the I-form with ვ-.

    მე ვეჩვენები, რომ ცივა.
    მეჩვენება, რომ ცივა.

    ვეჩვენები means I seem to him. It seems to me is მეჩვენება.
