Remember and Forgot

Level 3Sounds Like makhsovs/damavitsʼqʼda

მახსოვს (makhsovs) means I remember and დამავიწყდა (damavits'q'da) means I forgot.

How It Works

Remembering and forgetting work like feeling verbs. The person who remembers is marked at the front of the verb, and the thing is in the nominative:

PersonRememberForgot
Iმახსოვსდამავიწყდა
youგახსოვსდაგავიწყდა
he, sheახსოვსდაავიწყდა
weგვახსოვსდაგვავიწყდა

With a name, the person who remembers is in the dative: ნინოს ახსოვს (Nino remembers), ნინოს დაავიწყდა (Nino forgot).

დამავიწყდა also covers leaving something behind: გასაღები დამავიწყდა (I forgot the key). To forget to do something, use a verbal noun: წერილის დაწერა დამავიწყდა (I forgot to write the letter).

Add რომ for a whole fact: დამავიწყდა, რომ დღეს შაბათია (I forgot that today is Saturday).
