Verbal Nouns With an Object

Level 3

A verbal noun puts its object in the genitive, before it.

How It Works

A verbal noun can have an object, just like its verb. Because the verbal noun is a noun, the object takes the genitive -ის and goes before it:

Verb phraseVerbal noun phraseMeaning
წიგნს ვკითხულობწიგნის კითხვაreading a book
წერილს დავწერწერილის დაწერაwriting a letter
ბინას ვყიდულობბინის ყიდვაbuying a flat
ფილმებს ვუყურებფილმების ყურებაwatching films

It works like of in English: the reading of a book. Vowel stems and vowel loss follow the usual genitive rules: ხინკალი, ხინკლის ჭამა (eating khinkali).

The whole phrase then acts as one noun: ფილმების ყურება მიყვარს (I love watching films), ბინის ყიდვა ძვირია (buying a flat is expensive).

A verbal noun with a preverb, such as დაწერა, means one finished act: წერილის დაწერა is writing a particular letter.

Examples (5)

  1. ქართულის სწავლა მინდა.

    I want to learn Georgian.

    ქართულის, the genitive, before სწავლა.

  2. ფილმების ყურება მიყვარს.

    I love watching films.

    ფილმების, the plural genitive.

  3. ბინის ყიდვა ძალიან ძვირია.

Buying a flat is very expensive.

ბინის ყიდვა acts as one noun.

  4. ხინკლის ჭამა ყველას უყვარს.

    Everyone loves eating khinkali.

ხინკალი loses its ა in the genitive.

  5. წერილის დაწერა დამავიწყდა.

I forgot to write the letter.

    წერილის before დაწერა.
