არ

Not

Level 1Sounds Like ar

Put არ right before the verb to make it negative.

How It Works

StatementNegative
ვიცი. (I know.)არ ვიცი. (I don't know.)
ნინო აქ ცხოვრობს. (Nino lives here.)ნინო აქ არ ცხოვრობს. (Nino doesn't live here.)
ხორცს ვჭამ. (I eat meat.)ხორცს არ ვჭამ. (I don't eat meat.)

Four words share the work of no and not:

  • არ: not, before a verb (არ მინდა, I don't want it).
  • არა: no, on its own (არა, მადლობა, no, thank you).
  • ვერ: can't, before a verb (ვერ ვხედავ, I can't see).
  • ნუ: don't, in a request (ნუ ტირი, don't cry). You will learn ნუ at Level 2.

With words like არავინ (nobody), Georgian often keeps არ as well: არავინ არ მოდის (nobody is coming). This is normal speech.
