ხომ არ
Do You Happen to
Start a question with ხომ არ to ask gently, like do you happen to or by any chance.
How It Works
Compare three questions:
- კალამი გაქვთ? (Do you have a pen?) A plain question.
- ხომ არ (khom ar) გაქვთ კალამი? (Do you happen to have a pen?) A gentle request.
- კალამი ხომ გაქვთ? (You have a pen, right?) ხომ alone checks something you expect.
ხომ არ is very common when you ask strangers for help: ხომ არ იცით, რომელი ავტობუსი მიდის ცენტრში? (Do you happen to know which bus goes to the center?)
With friends and family, it shows care: ხომ არ გშია? (Are you hungry, by any chance?)
Keep the არ. Without it, ხომ turns the question into a check that expects yes.
