არავინ/არაფერი
No One and Nothing
არავინ means no one and არაფერი means nothing; speech often keeps არ before the verb too.
How It Works
არავინ is built from არა (no) and ვინ (who). არაფერი is its partner for things.
| Use | No one | Nothing |
|---|---|---|
| subject | არავინ | არაფერი |
| object of a doing verb in the present | არავის | არაფერს |
Georgian is happy to say no twice. Both of these are correct:
- არავინ მოდის. (No one is coming.)
- არავინ არ მოდის. (No one is coming.)
The second is more common in speech. You can use either one.
Use the right case. The object of ვიცნობ (I know a person) is in the dative, so you say არავის ვიცნობ (I don't know anyone). With ვიცი, the thing stays nominative: არაფერი ვიცი. As a short answer, the word matches the question: რას აკეთებ? (What are you doing?) is answered with არაფერს (nothing).
Examples (5)
- არავინ არ მოდის.
No one is coming.
Speech often keeps არ as well.
- არაფერი ვიცი.
I don't know anything.
არაფერი alone already says no.
- — რას აკეთებ? — არაფერს.
"What are you doing?" "Nothing."
The answer matches the dative რას.
- ამ ქალაქში არავის ვიცნობ.
I don't know anyone in this city.
As the object of ვიცნობ: არავის.
- არაფერი არ მინდა.
I don't want anything.
With მინდა, the thing stays nominative.
Common Mistakes
Using the nominative for an object in the present.
ამ ქალაქში არავინ ვიცნობ.ამ ქალაქში არავის ვიცნობ.The object of ვიცნობ takes the dative: არავის.
