ვერ
Cannot
Put ვერ before the verb to say someone can't do something.
How It Works
| With არ | With ვერ |
|---|---|
| არ მოვდივარ. (I'm not coming.) | ვერ მოვდივარ. (I can't come.) |
| არ ვკითხულობ. (I'm not reading.) | ვერ ვკითხულობ. (I can't read it.) |
| ქართულად არ ვლაპარაკობ. (I don't speak Georgian.) | ქართულად ვერ ვლაპარაკობ. (I can't speak Georgian.) |
The choice changes the meaning. არ მოვდივარ sounds like a decision, while ვერ მოვდივარ says that something stops you. When you turn down an invitation, ვერ is the kinder word.
ვერ does the work of can't without a separate verb for can. Georgian also has შემიძლია (I can), which you will learn at Level 2.
