არა ..., არამედ
Not ... but
არა ..., არამედ means not this, but that.
How It Works
| Not this | But this |
|---|---|
| არა ექიმი, | არამედ მასწავლებელი (not a doctor but a teacher) |
| არა ორშაბათს, | არამედ სამშაბათს (not on Monday but on Tuesday) |
| არა თბილისში, | არამედ ქუთაისში (not in Tbilisi but in Kutaisi) |
Before a noun or another single word, the word for not is არა. არ belongs right before a verb.
The two items match in case and shape: ორშაბათს and სამშაბათს are both dative, and თბილისში and ქუთაისში both have -ში.
The verb usually comes once, at the end: ნინო არა ექიმი, არამედ მასწავლებელია.
You will meet this pattern in news and in writing. In conversation, people more often say ექიმი კი არა, მასწავლებელია.
