ĝis / dum / tuj kiam
Until, While, As Soon as
Each word marks a different point or span of time.
How It Works
| Word | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ĝis | Ni atendos ĉi tie, ĝis la trajno alvenos. | We will wait here until the train arrives. |
| dum | Dum Ana kuiras, Kenji legas la gazeton. | While Ana cooks, Kenji reads the newspaper. |
| tuj kiam | Tuj kiam la kunveno finiĝos, ni iros manĝi. | As soon as the meeting ends, we will go to eat. |
Ĝis points to a moment: the main action stops when the ĝis action starts. So write Mi restis, ĝis li ekdormis (until he fell asleep). Do not add kiam, and do not add ne to the ĝis clause.
Dum fits two actions that last about as long as each other. Dum and kiam are not used together.
Tuj kiam is kiam with tuj (at once) in front.

Common Mistakes
Adding kiam after ĝis.
Mi atendos, ĝis kiam vi venos.Mi atendos, ĝis vi venos.Ĝis starts the clause by itself. Ĝis kiam appears only in a question inside a sentence, as in Mi demandis, ĝis kiam ili restos.
Adding kiam after dum.
Tio okazis, dum kiam mi loĝis en Romo.Tio okazis, dum mi loĝis en Romo.Dum starts the clause by itself. Kiam and dum show different shades, so they are not used together.
