ဆိုရင်
If That Is So
After a noun, ဆိုရင် means "as for" or "if it's": ခင်ဗျားဆိုရင် (if it were you).
How It Works
ဆိုရင် is a fuller "if". Plain ရင် follows a bare verb. ဆိုရင် follows a whole sentence, ending and all.
| With ရင် | With ဆိုရင် |
|---|---|
| အားရင် | အားတယ်ဆိုရင် |
| မလာနိုင်ရင် | မလာနိုင်ဘူးဆိုရင် |
Each pair means the same: "if you're free" and "if you can't come". ဆိုရင် treats the condition as a fact someone might tell you, so it fits "if that's so, then…".
After a noun, ဆိုရင် picks out a topic:
- ခင်ဗျားဆိုရင် ဘာလုပ်မလဲ။ (What would you do?)
- ရှမ်းခေါက်ဆွဲဆိုရင်… (If it's Shan noodles…)
- ဒါဆိုရင်… (In that case…)
In quick speech, ဆိုရင် often shrinks to ဆို: ဒါဆို. Writing uses ဆိုလျှင် or လျှင်. A spoken sentence that ends in တယ် or ဘူး keeps ဆိုရင်.
A question can follow ဆိုရင်: မိုးရွာတယ်ဆိုရင် ဘာလုပ်မလဲ။ (If it rains, what will you do?) The answer can use the same frame: မိုးရွာတယ်ဆိုရင် အိမ်မှာ နေမယ်။ (If it rains, I'll stay home.)

Common Mistakes
Using the written ဆိုလျှင် in a spoken sentence.
မနက်ဖြန် အားတယ်ဆိုလျှင် ဖုန်းဆက်ပါ။မနက်ဖြန် အားတယ်ဆိုရင် ဖုန်းဆက်ပါ။ဆိုလျှင် belongs to writing, and တယ် belongs to speech. In a spoken sentence, use ဆိုရင်.
