ရင်

If and When

Level 3

V-ရင် ကောင်းမယ် means "it would be good to" or "you'd better".

How It Works

ရင် joins a condition to its result. The condition always comes first.

ConditionResultEnglish
မိုးရွာရင်အိမ်မှာ နေမယ်။If it rains, I'll stay home.
မလာနိုင်ရင်ဖုန်းဆက်ပါ။If you can't come, call me.
အားရင်စာဖတ်တယ်။When I'm free, I read.

One word covers "if" and "when". With a result in မယ် or a request, it is a condition. With a result in တယ်, it is a habit: whenever this happens, that happens.

A handy phrase is V-ရင် ကောင်းမယ်: စောစော ထွက်ရင် ကောင်းမယ်။ (We'd better leave early.)

For a stronger "if that is so", use ဆိုရင် after a full sentence. Writing uses လျှင်.

The two clauses can have different subjects: သူ လာရင် ကျွန်မ သွားမယ်။ (If he comes, I'll go.) Put each subject at the start of its own clause.

    မိုးရွာတယ်ရင် အိမ်မှာ နေမယ်။
    မိုးရွာရင် အိမ်မှာ နေမယ်။

    ရင် follows the bare verb.
