It often carries surprise or blame, as in "you knew, and you still didn't tell me".

How It Works

ရက်နဲ့ joins a fact to an action that goes against it. The person knew or had something, and still acted otherwise: ကိုကို သိရက်နဲ့ မပြောဘူး။ (Ko Ko knew and still didn't tell me.)

These are the most common.

The sentence often sounds like a complaint or a gentle scolding, so it fits questions with ဘာလို့ (why): ပိုက်ဆံ ရှိရက်နဲ့ ဘာလို့ မဝယ်တာလဲ (you have the money, so why didn't you buy it?).

Use ရက်နဲ့ when a person chooses to act against a fact. For a plain contrast between two facts, use ပေမယ့်: ဈေးကြီးပေမယ့် အရသာ ကောင်းတယ် (it's expensive, but it tastes good).

The first verb stays bare. The ending goes on the last verb.

In writing the same idea is လျက်နှင့်: သိလျက်နှင့် မပြောပါ (knowing it, he did not say). Many people also spell the spoken form လျက်နဲ့.

  2. ပိုက်ဆံ ရှိရက်နဲ့ ဘာလို့ မဝယ်တာလဲ။

    You have the money, so why didn't you buy it?

    ရှိရက်နဲ့ sets up the question "why not?".

  3. မိုးရွာနေတာ သိရက်နဲ့ သူ ထီးမယူဘဲ ထွက်သွားတယ်။

    He knew it was raining, and still he went out without an umbrella.

    He knew about the rain, and ရက်နဲ့ shows he went out anyway. သူ can be he or she.

  4. ဗိုက်ပြည့်နေရက်နဲ့ မုန့်ထပ်စားတယ်။

    I was already full, but I ate more snacks anyway.

    The speaker was full and kept eating anyway.

  5. ကျွန်တော် မေးနေရက်နဲ့ ခင်ဗျား ဘာမှ မဖြေဘူး။

    I kept asking, and you didn't answer at all.

    A man complains that the listener ignored his questions.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ရက်နဲ့ for a plain contrast between two facts.

    ဈေးကြီးရက်နဲ့ အရသာ ကောင်းတယ်။
    ဈေးကြီးပေမယ့် အရသာ ကောင်းတယ်။

    ရက်နဲ့ is for a person who acts against what he or she knows. Two facts that contrast take ပေမယ့်.
