Add သော after ကဲ့သို့ when a noun comes next, and add ပင် for "just like".

How It Works

Written Burmese has one word for "like" and "as", with two shapes. The shape depends on the word in front of it.

When the comparison describes a noun that comes next, add သော: ရန်ကုန်ကဲ့သို့သော မြို့ကြီးများ means big cities like Yangon. When it describes a whole action, the sentence just goes on: ယမန်နှစ်ကဲ့သို့ ကျင်းပမည် means it will be held as it was last year.

Add ပင် for "just like" or "in the same way": ယမန်နှစ်ကဲ့သို့ပင်.

News uses သကဲ့သို့ to say an event matched a plan or a forecast. Stories and poems use ကဲ့သို့ for pictures in words, such as a face that shines like the full moon.

In speech, the same ideas use လို after a noun and သလို after a verb. Keep each sentence in one style: လို never goes into a sentence that ends with သည်.

  1. ရန်ကုန်ကဲ့သို့သော မြို့ကြီးများတွင် ယာဉ်ကြောပိတ်ဆို့မှု များပြားသည်။

    In big cities like Yangon, traffic jams are common.

    ကဲ့သို့သော links ရန်ကုန် to the noun မြို့ကြီးများ.

  2. ယမန်နှစ်ကဲ့သို့ပင် ယခုနှစ်တွင်လည်း သင်္ကြန်ပွဲတော်ကို စည်ကားစွာ ကျင်းပမည်။

    Just like last year, the Thingyan festival will be held with big crowds this year.

    ကဲ့သို့ပင် means "just like" after the noun ယမန်နှစ်.

  3. ခန့်မှန်းထားသကဲ့သို့ မိုးသည်းထန်စွာ ရွာသွန်းခဲ့သည်။

    Just as forecast, heavy rain fell.

    သကဲ့သို့ follows the verb ခန့်မှန်းထား.

  4. ဆရာ ညွှန်ကြားသကဲ့သို့ ကျောင်းသားများသည် လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများကို ပြုလုပ်ကြသည်။

    The students did the exercises just as the teacher told them to.

    သကဲ့သို့ compares what the students did with what the teacher said.

  5. သူ၏ မျက်နှာသည် လပြည့်ဝန်းကဲ့သို့ ဝင်းပသည်။

    Her face shone like the full moon.

    A picture in words with ကဲ့သို့; သူ can mean he or she, and here it is she.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ကဲ့သို့ straight after a verb.

    ခန့်မှန်းထားကဲ့သို့ မိုးရွာသွန်းခဲ့သည်။
    ခန့်မှန်းထားသကဲ့သို့ မိုးရွာသွန်းခဲ့သည်။

    After a verb, the word starts with သ: သကဲ့သို့.

  • Using spoken လို in a written sentence.

    ရန်ကုန်လို မြို့ကြီးများတွင် ယာဉ်ကြောပိတ်ဆို့မှု များပြားသည်။
    ရန်ကုန်ကဲ့သို့သော မြို့ကြီးများတွင် ယာဉ်ကြောပိတ်ဆို့မှု များပြားသည်။

    A sentence that ends with သည် takes the written form ကဲ့သို့.
