After a noun, add ဖြစ် first: ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သဖြင့် means "because it is a holiday".

How It Works

သဖြင့် means "because" or "as". News reports use it to join a cause to its result, with the cause first: ရေကြီးသဖြင့် လမ်းကို ပိတ်ထားသည်။ (The road is closed because of flooding.)

သဖြင့် and သောကြောင့် mean the same thing. သဖြင့် is shorter and is the usual choice in news. Essays and school books use သောကြောင့် more.

The cause is a verb. When it is a noun, add ဖြစ် (to be): ယနေ့သည် ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သဖြင့် (because today is a holiday).

The cause can be a long clause: မီးလောင်မှုကို အချိန်မီ ငြိမ်းသတ်နိုင်သဖြင့် (because the fire could be put out in time).

For a negative cause, put မ before the verb: မိုးမရွာသဖြင့် ရေရှားပါးလာသည် (water is running short because it has not rained).

Watch the spelling. သဖြင့် is built with ဖြင့် (by means of), so it ends with the dot ့. Keep the whole sentence written: လို့ and spoken endings do not go with သဖြင့်.

    Because the flight was delayed, passengers waited for hours.

    The delay is the cause, and the long wait is the result.

  3. ဈေးနှုန်း မြင့်တက်လာသဖြင့် ဝယ်ယူသူများ လျော့နည်းလာသည်။

    As prices rise, fewer people are buying.

    သဖြင့် links rising prices to falling sales.

  4. ယနေ့သည် ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သဖြင့် ဘဏ်များ ပိတ်ထားသည်။

    Because today is a public holiday, the banks are closed.

    The noun ရုံးပိတ်ရက် takes ဖြစ် before သဖြင့်.

  5. မီးလောင်မှုကို အချိန်မီ ငြိမ်းသတ်နိုင်သဖြင့် ထိခိုက်ဒဏ်ရာရသူ မရှိခဲ့ပါ။

    Because the fire was put out in time, no one was injured.

    A long cause still ends with the bare verb plus သဖြင့်.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting သဖြင့် straight after a noun.

    ရုံးပိတ်ရက်သဖြင့် ဘဏ်များ ပိတ်ထားသည်။
    ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သဖြင့် ဘဏ်များ ပိတ်ထားသည်။

    သဖြင့် follows a verb, so a noun takes ဖြစ် first.
