အရင် / နောက်

Before and Next

Level 2

Add က and မှ to make two common time phrases: အရင်က (in the past) and နောက်မှ (later on).

How It Works

အရင် looks back and နောက် looks ahead.

PhraseMeaning
အရင် စားပါ။Eat first.
အရင်ကin the past, before
နောက်အပတ်next week
နောက်တစ်ခါnext time
နောက်မှlater on

အရင်က means "in the past". It tells the listener things were different then: အရင်က မန္တလေးမှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။ (I used to live in Mandalay.)

နောက်မှ means "later, not now". It is a polite way to put something off: နောက်မှ ပြောမယ်။ (I'll tell you later.)

For "next" with a time, နောက် comes first: နောက်အပတ်, never အပတ်နောက်.

For "before doing something", use မ…ခင်: မစားခင် လက်ဆေးပါ။ (Wash your hands before you eat.) That pattern has its own entry.

နောက် also means "behind" for places: အိမ်နောက်မှာ (behind the house). The verb နောက်ကျ (be late) is built on the same word: it means falling behind.

Examples (5)

  1. နောက်အပတ် ပြန်တွေ့မယ်နော်။

See you again next week, OK?

နောက် comes before အပတ် for "next week".

  2. ကျွန်မ အရင်သွားမယ်။

    I'll go first.

အရင် before the verb means "first".

  3. အရင်က မန္တလေးမှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။

I used to live in Mandalay.

    အရင်က means "in the past".

  4. ကျွန်တော် နောက်မှ ဖုန်းဆက်ပါမယ်ခင်ဗျာ။

    I'll call you later.

နောက်မှ means "later on"; ခင်ဗျာ shows a man is speaking.

  5. နောက်တစ်ခါ ပုဂံကို အတူတူ သွားရအောင်။

Let's go to Bagan together next time.

    နောက်တစ်ခါ means "next time".

Common Mistakes

  • Putting နောက် after the time word.

    အပတ်နောက် တွေ့မယ်။
    နောက်အပတ် တွေ့မယ်။

For "next week", နောက် comes first.

  • Using အရင် after a verb for "before eating".

    စားအရင် လက်ဆေးပါ။
    မစားခင် လက်ဆေးပါ။

    Before an action, use မ…ခင်.
