जहाँ ... उहाँ

Where ... There

Level 4Sounds Like jahām̐ ... uhām̐

जहाँ starts a place clause and उहाँ answers it with the place in the main sentence.

How It Works

जहाँ ... उहाँ builds a sentence in two parts. The first part, with जहाँ, sets the place. The second part, with उहाँ, says what happens at that place.

First halfSecond half
जहाँ चाय मिलीउहाँ बइठब
जहाँ भीड़ अहैउहाँ मत जाव
जहाँ तुम कहौउहाँ हम चलब

The verb in the first half often looks ahead (मिली, कहौ) when the plan is not settled yet. It can also be a plain present (अहै) for a fact.

Awadhi says उहाँ for "there". Use उहाँ, not the Hindi वहाँ. You may hear हुआँ near Lakhimpur, but this course uses उहाँ.

The second half can drop उहाँ when the place is clear.

Examples (4)

  1. जहाँ चाय मिली, उहाँ बइठब।

    We'll sit wherever there's tea.

जहाँ names the place and उहाँ answers it.

  2. जहाँ अम्मा रहत अहैं, उहाँ हमहूँ रहब।

Wherever Amma lives, I'll live there too.

उहाँ points back to the place Amma lives.

  3. जहाँ भीड़ अहै, उहाँ मत जाव।

    Don't go where there's a crowd.

The command comes in the second half after उहाँ.

  4. जहाँ तुम कहौ, उहाँ हम चलब।

    I'll go wherever you say.

The first half leaves the place open; उहाँ fills it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi word वहाँ for "there".

    जहाँ चाय मिली, वहाँ बइठब।
    जहाँ चाय मिली, उहाँ बइठब।

    Awadhi answers जहाँ with उहाँ.
