हम
I and We: हम
हम means I as well as we in everyday Awadhi.
How It Works
Hindi has मैं for I and हम for we. Awadhi uses हम for both, and in central speech the verb does not change.
| Awadhi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| हम जाब | I will go, or we will go |
| हम अही | I am, or we are |
| हम गएन | I went, or we went |
If it is not clear from the situation, add लोग: हम लोग घरे अही means we are at home. A group of people can also be named: अमित अउर हम.
हम has a few related forms: हमका (to me), हमसे (from me) and हमार (my, our). हमार becomes हमरे when a postposition follows the noun, and before खातिर and संग: हमरे घर मा, हमरे खातिर.
You may hear मैं from some Lucknow city speakers, who borrow it from Hindi, and मोर or मोका in the west near Sitapur. The lessons use हम.
